Biography
Aprell is an ASCP-certified Pathologists' Assistant with more than twenty-five years of healthcare experience spanning emergency medicine, clinical research, laboratory medicine, and surgical pathology. Her diverse background provides a unique perspective that combines technical expertise, clinical understanding, and a deep commitment to patient care.
Aprell developed her passion for pathology while serving as a lead research associate at the University of Pittsburgh, where she collaborated closely with principal investigators, surgeons, pathologists, and bioinformatics teams on complex research initiatives. She subsequently completed advanced training within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's Centers of Excellence, gaining extensive experience in the evaluation and processing of highly complex surgical pathology specimens.
Throughout her career, Aprell has practiced in both academic medical centers and community hospital settings across Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Florida. Her expertise includes comprehensive specimen examination, tissue procurement, gross photography and imaging, tumor mapping, frozen section consultation, quality assurance activities, and pathology education. She has also trained Pathologists' Assistants, pathology residents, and NAACLS Pathologists' Assistant students.
Known for her integrity, technical precision, and collaborative approach, Aprell is dedicated to ensuring accurate diagnoses and supporting the highest standards of patient care. She especially enjoys the critical role Pathologists' Assistants play behind the scenes in the diagnostic process and has a particular interest in intraoperative consultations and frozen section procedures. As a unique distinction, she was selected as a torchbearer for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.
