Biography
Dr. Guillermo Herrera is an internationally recognized renal pathologist with decades of experience in diagnostic pathology, nephropathology, academic medicine, and pathology leadership. Throughout his distinguished career, he has been recognized for his expertise in kidney disease, renal transplantation pathology, and plasma cell dyscrasia-related renal disorders, earning a reputation as one of the leading authorities in nephropathology. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus of Pathology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine.
Dr. Herrera completed his medical training and subsequently pursued a career dedicated to diagnostic pathology and academic medicine. Over the course of his career, he held numerous faculty and leadership positions, including serving as Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and later as Professor and Chair of Pathology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. In these roles, he helped advance pathology education, laboratory medicine, and clinical research while mentoring generations of pathologists and physicians.
A prolific educator, researcher, and author, Dr. Herrera has published extensively in the fields of nephropathology, renal disease, and plasma cell dyscrasias, contributing significantly to the understanding of monoclonal immunoglobulin-related kidney disorders and other complex renal diseases. His work has been presented nationally and internationally and has influenced both diagnostic practice and patient care.
Dr. Herrera remains actively involved in consultation and education within the field of renal pathology. His extensive clinical, academic, and research experience continues to support physicians and healthcare organizations in the diagnosis and management of complex kidney diseases, reinforcing a lifelong commitment to diagnostic excellence and patient-centered care.
