Biography
Dr. James Snyder is an internationally recognized clinical microbiologist and laboratory medicine leader with more than five decades of experience in diagnostic microbiology, infectious diseases, molecular diagnostics, and academic medicine. Throughout his distinguished career, he has served as a clinician, educator, researcher, military officer, and national advisor, earning recognition for his contributions to clinical microbiology, laboratory preparedness, and infectious disease diagnostics.
Dr. Snyder earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Eastern Kentucky University and his PhD in Medical Microbiology from the University of Dayton. Since 1996, he has served as Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, where he also directs Microbiology and Infectious Disease Molecular Diagnostics. Prior to joining the University of Louisville faculty, he served as Director of Microbiology for Norton-Kosair Children’s Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Louisville.
A retired Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, Dr. Snyder served as Commander of a Medical Task Force during Operation New Dawn in Iraq and has played a prominent role in national laboratory preparedness and bioterrorism response initiatives. He has advised public health agencies, served on numerous committees for the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and contributed to national laboratory guidelines and preparedness programs.
Dr. Snyder has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, national practice guidelines, and educational resources in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. A Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and recipient of numerous professional and teaching awards, he remains dedicated to advancing diagnostic excellence, laboratory innovation, and the education of future healthcare professionals.
