Biography

Dr. Maher Albitar is an internationally recognized molecular pathologist, hematopathologist, and healthcare executive with extensive experience in diagnostic pathology, genomic medicine, laboratory leadership, and translational research. Throughout his distinguished career, he has played a pivotal role in advancing molecular diagnostics and precision medicine, helping shape the development and clinical adoption of innovative genomic testing technologies.

Dr. Albitar is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and completed advanced fellowship training in Hematopathology and Molecular Pathology. Following his hematopathology fellowship, he participated in the Physician-Scientist Training Program at the University of Pennsylvania and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, where he conducted advanced research in molecular genetics and cancer biology.

Prior to founding Genomic Testing Cooperative, Dr. Albitar served as Senior Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, and Director of Research and Development at NeoGenomics Laboratories. During his tenure, he helped transform NeoGenomics from a company focused primarily on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing into one of the nation's leading providers of comprehensive molecular and genomic diagnostic services. Previously, he served as Medical Director for Hematopathology and Oncology and Chief of Research and Development for Hematopathology and Oncology at Quest Diagnostics.

Before entering industry leadership, Dr. Albitar spent more than a decade at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he held numerous leadership positions including Section Chief of Leukemia in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, and Director of the Hematopathology Fellowship Program. He was a tenured Professor of Pathology and Leukemia at MD Anderson at the time of his departure.

A prolific investigator and innovator, Dr. Albitar has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, review articles, and book chapters and is the lead inventor on more than 50 patents and patent applications. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Genomic Testing Cooperative, he continues to advance the integration of molecular diagnostics, genomics, and precision oncology to improve patient care and expand access to innovative diagnostic solutions.
